The United℠ Business Card*The information for the United℠ Business Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. Instead of earning 50,000 bonus miles for spending $5,000 in your first three months with the card, you’ll earn 100,000 bonus miles for meeting the same spending requirement. You’ll need to have a small business to be eligible to apply for this card, but it doesn’t have to be a full-time venture. Side gigs such as delivering for Instacart or freelancing could qualify you for a business credit card.

A United mile is worth 1.45 cents, according to January valuations from frequent flyer website The Points Guy, putting United MileagePlus around the middle of the pack among airline loyalty programs.

United loyalists can get strong value from this card by using their miles wisely and taking advantage of the card’s other benefits. For example, if you use your card to book a United flight, you’ll get one free checked bag for yourself and another for one other person on your reservation. United charges $35 for the first checked bag, so this perk could save you up to $140 if you fly round-trip with a companion. This can save you a lot of cash if you check bags and fly United even a couple of times a year.

Plus, you’ll get a $100 statement credit each year when you make at least seven eligible United purchases of $100 or more. For this credit, a year is measured from the date you opened your account. Cardholders also receive two one-time United Club airport lounge passes each year, which is a nice treat if you don’t otherwise have lounge access.

If you spend enough, you can also use your card to get United elite status faster, because you’ll earn 500 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) when you spend $12,000 on the card, up to a maximum of 1,000 PQP per calendar year.

The card charges a $99 annual fee.

United Club Business Card: Earn 75,000 miles and 1,000 premier-qualifying points

The United Club℠ Business card*The information for the United Club℠ Business card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. is upping its welcome bonus from 50,000 bonus miles for spending $3,000 in your first three months with the card. Under the new offer, you can spend the same amount and get 75,000 miles plus 1,000 PQP.

The card charges a steep $450 annual fee, which can be worth it depending on how you use the card and its perks. For example, if you were planning to pay the $550, $600 or $650 annual membership fee to access United’s airport lounges, this card is a good option because a United Club membership is included.

United Club lounges provide free snacks and drinks, fast Wi-Fi and a more comfortable place to spend the time before your flight. A few locations even offer showers. On top of that, your card comes with access to eligible Star Alliance lounges.

You’ll get two checked bags free on United flights booked with your card, as will one person booked on the same reservation. Like with the United℠ Business Card*The information for the United℠ Business Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. Other perks include 25% off eligible in-flight purchases and elite status with rental car company Avis.

Why earn United miles?

United MileagePlus miles are valuable because you can redeem them for award flights on United and its Star Alliance partners, including Lufthansa, Air Canada and Singapore Airlines. United also partners with airlines outside this alliance, such as Aer Lingus and Hawaiian Airlines.

Because United doesn’t have an award chart, the price you’ll pay for an award ticket varies depending on route, time of year, demand and other factors. You can generally expect to pay between 5,000 and 15,000 miles for a one-way domestic flight in economy class, but you’ll pay (sometimes much) more for international flights.

Depending on where and when you travel, these United credit card welcome offers could get you multiple flights within the US, or just one or two if you travel abroad. You’ll get the best deals with United MileagePlus miles if your travel dates are flexible.

Having a United credit card unlocks a very useful feature, however. Cardholders get access to expanded saver award availability on United flights, which means you’ll see more cheap award seats than those without a United credit card will. This perk can save you a ton of miles, particularly if you’re booking for several people.

United credit card alternatives

United’s credit cards are solid options for frequent flyers with United. Chase Ultimate Rewards® points provide another way to earn United miles with credit card rewards. You won’t get the same United-specific travel perks, but you’ll have more flexibility in how you redeem rewards.

Specifically, you’ll need at least one of the three Chase cards that lets you transfer your points at a 1:1 ratio to United MileagePlus (among other travel loyalty programs). Those cards offer the following welcome bonuses:

  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card: 100,000 bonus points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®: 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on the card within the first three months after opening the account, which are worth a guaranteed $900 when you redeem them for travel via the Chase travel portal.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card: 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

With these and any of the United cards, you’ll need to be eligible to open a new Chase card, which means, in part, following the 5/24 rule. In short, you probably can’t open a new Chase card if you’ve opened five or more new credit cards in the last two years.

For renters, another strong option is the Bilt Mastercard®. Bilt also offers 1:1 point transfers to travel loyalty programs including United MileagePlus. It doesn’t offer a welcome bonus, but it does earn 1 point per dollar on rent payments (up to 100,000 points each year).
